Chapter 7 - Twenty-Seven Seconds That Rewrote the Past

Her voice came through into the quiet hospital hallway. She sounded frightened. Nothing like the steady, controlled woman from the last weeks of our marriage.

"Nathan, it's me again. They told me you don't want my calls put through. I'm not calling to fight. I went to the doctor today. I'm eight weeks pregnant. Please call me back."

A pause.

Then: "I know you've decided I'm the one who wanted this divorce. That's not what happened. That night, you said you were done asking me to stay. You said if I wanted out, we should just end it. I begged you not to decide that while we were both angry. You were the one who ended us. I never wanted to go."

The message cut off.

I stood there completely still.

And I remembered it. Not the version I'd been running on repeat for half a year. The real one.

She said she felt invisible. I said nothing I did was ever enough.

And one night, tired and furious, I said it: "I'm not going to keep begging you to stay somewhere you don't want to be. Maybe we should just stop doing this to each other."

She cried. She asked me not to decide our whole future in the middle of a fight.

I was the one who called a lawyer the next morning.

Somewhere in the six months since, I'd quietly rewritten the whole thing until I'd made her the one who walked out.

She hadn't. I pushed first.
