Chapter 4 - Every Door That Was Closed

At first I didn't understand what she meant.
Then she started listing it out.
She'd called my office. More than once. She'd emailed. She'd tried my personal cell. She'd driven to the Calloway Development building downtown. Twice.
The first time, she'd taken three drugstore pregnancy tests that morning, and every one of them was positive.
The second time she was almost twelve weeks along, with an ultrasound picture folded in her purse.
Security wouldn't let her past the lobby.
"They told me you'd left specific instructions. No personal visitors. No exceptions."
I couldn't say anything, because it was true.
After the split, I'd sat my assistant down and told her I wanted a clean break. No surprise personal calls. No visitors connected to the divorce. No interruptions. I told myself I was protecting my focus.
Marin kept going.
"I called your lawyer too."
"And?"
"He said anything about the divorce had to go through your office. He'd 'pass the message along.'"
Something cold went down my spine. "He never told me a thing."
"Nobody told you anything, Nathan."
I dragged both hands down my face. "Then why did you stop trying?"
Her expression hardened, and her voice with it.

"How many locked doors was I supposed to stand in front of before I got the message that you didn't want me on the other side of them?"
I had no answer for that.
