Chapter 1 - The Call That Stopped Everything

Six Months After Our Divorce, a Hospital Called About a Baby I Didn't Know I Had — and the Blocked Calls on My Phone Told the Real Story

Six months after my divorce was finalized, I was sitting at the head of a conference table in downtown Houston, seconds away from signing the biggest contract of my career, when my phone rang.
Normally I'd never touch an unknown number in the middle of a meeting. That morning, for a reason I still can't explain, I picked up.
"Mr. Calloway? My name is Dr. Patricia Vance. I'm calling from Northgate Memorial Hospital. Your son arrived early this morning."
For a few seconds I was sure she had the wrong man.
Nine investors sat around that table. Two attorneys had paperwork spread out in front of them. My business partner of sixteen years was in the chair beside me. In the center of it all was a development agreement worth nearly $940 million, and my pen was hovering a half inch above the signature line.
"I'm sorry," I said. "Your — my what?"
The doctor paused.
"Your son. His mother is Marin Hale."
The room seemed to fall away from me.
Marin. My ex-wife. The woman I hadn't spoken to in six months. The woman I'd spent six months convincing myself was better off without me.
"Is Marin okay?"
That was the first thing out of my mouth.
"She developed serious complications late in the pregnancy. We had to deliver at thirty-two weeks. She's stable now, but both mother and baby need close monitoring."
I stood up so fast my chair rolled into the credenza behind me.
"Why are you calling me?"
May you like
Another pause. Then the doctor said the sentence that took apart everything I thought I knew.
"Because Ms. Hale listed you as the baby's father."
