Chapter 11 - The Day We Brought Eli Home

On discharge day, Dr. Vance handed us a folder thick with instructions. Then she smiled.
"Preemies almost never remember their first weeks in here." She looked at both of us. "But the parents always remember who was standing next to them."
Marin glanced at me. I knew exactly what the doctor meant.
I carried Eli out through the front doors myself. He looked ridiculously tiny buckled into that car seat.
But he was going home.
And so was I — though I wasn't sure anymore what that word meant.
My place downtown suddenly felt enormous and empty. Marin's little apartment over in the Heights was full of canvases, paperbacks, houseplants, half-folded baby blankets. Full of life.
So I started spending more time there.

"Too many rooms. Not enough people."
