Chapter 10 - Eighteen Days

Eli was in the hospital for eighteen days.
So was I. Not every hour. But every hour that counted.
I learned how to lift him without pulling a single wire. How to warm a bottle the size of my thumb. Which alarm meant "normal" and which one made three nurses move at once.
I learned that four pounds could somehow become the center of the entire universe.
The $940 million contract got signed without me in the room. For the first time in my adult life, the company ran just fine without me hovering over it.
That humbled me more than I wanted to admit.
Marin got stronger. So did Eli.

We didn't magically turn back into husband and wife. Life doesn't fold up that neatly. There were apologies that needed more than a day. There were years of letdowns still sitting in the room with us.
But we started talking. Actually talking. Not through lawyers. Not through assistants. Not through a shared calendar. Just two people in plastic chairs next to their son.
