Chapter 7 - The Morning I Finally Chose MyselfThe investigation continued for several months. Vienna cooperated and turned over further documentation. Several senior executives stepped down. Garrison faced formal financial proceedings and eventually lost control of the company he had spent years claiming he had created entirely on his own.

Priscilla sold many of the expensive belongings she had once displayed as symbols of her social standing. Delphine shut down her boutique and stayed away from social media for some time. Later, I learned that she had accepted an entry-level position with a marketing firm.
Aldric moved into a more modest house. Several months later, he mailed me a handwritten letter. He acknowledged something nobody else in the family had been willing to admit. He had noticed what was happening. He simply had not wanted confrontation.
When we eventually spoke, I told him: "Silence only seems harmless when you aren't the person affected by it."
He became emotional. I did not forgive him immediately. But I appreciated that he had finally recognized what his silence had meant.
The Charleston estate remained under my authority. I could easily have sold it. Instead, I gave it another purpose. The dining room where Priscilla had once criticized nearly everything I did became a space for meetings and counseling. The upstairs guest bedrooms became temporary accommodation for women rebuilding their independence after controlling relationships or challenging family circumstances. The kitchen where I had once stood by myself washing dishes became the most welcoming room in the entire house.
