Chapter 4 - The Woman at the Top of the StaircaseAt 9:47 p.m., the ballroom lights gradually dimmed. The Corbin Capital emblem appeared across the enormous screen behind the stage. The host approached the microphone.
He began by discussing a new nationwide initiative supporting community hospitals, affordable housing, clean-water infrastructure, and educational programs.
Then his voice shifted. "For years, the person responsible for directing many of Corbin Capital's largest investments has chosen to remain away from public attention. Tonight, for the first time, she has agreed to be formally introduced."
The doors above the ballroom opened. I walked through them.
The entire room became silent. My emerald gown flowed gently around me as I made my way down the staircase. My grandmother's necklace rested against my collarbone. Two members of my security team followed several steps behind me.
Halfway down the stairs, I finally turned my attention toward the central table.
Garrison was on his feet. His chair had tipped backward. Vienna's hand had fallen away from his arm. Priscilla looked completely speechless. Delphine still held her phone, unintentionally broadcasting every moment.
Garrison silently formed my name. "Marisol?"
I kept walking.
When I reached the stage, everyone rose in applause. I waited for the room to settle. Then I moved behind the microphone.
"My grandmother taught me that wealth rarely creates someone's character. Usually, it simply exposes the character that was already present."
Garrison started walking toward the stage. "Marisol, please—"
I lifted one hand. "Not yet."
He stopped.

I turned toward the ballroom. "Eight years ago, I married a man who believed I was an ordinary woman with an ordinary bank account and no powerful family connections. I kept my position private because I wanted to discover whether I could build a marriage untouched by wealth."
My eyes settled directly on Garrison. "Tonight, I finally received that answer."
