Chapter 1 - The Night They Left Me BehindThe crystal serving bowl slipped from my fingers and broke across the kitchen floor at the exact moment my husband entered the room.

My Husband Said I Wasn't "Refined Enough" for His Biggest Gala and Left Me Home Doing Dishes While He Went With Another Woman — Then the Host Introduced the Mysterious Chairwoman Behind His Company's Lifeline, and I Stepped Inside.

I stopped beside the marble island.

Dinner was finished. The salmon remained warm, the vegetables had been arranged precisely the way my mother-in-law liked them, and every setting around the dining table had already been inspected twice.

Still, Priscilla Bellamy stared at the shattered porcelain as though I had intentionally spoiled her evening.

"Eight years, Marisol," she said coolly. "Eight years with this family, and somehow you still find a way to make everything seem ordinary."

I knelt to gather the pieces.

My husband, Garrison Bellamy, remained by the doorway in a charcoal tuxedo. He gave me a quick glance before shifting his attention back toward his phone.

"Watch the floor," he said. "That marble was imported."

I stared at him. Not Are you hurt? Not Did you cut your hand? His concern was the floor.

That should have explained everything.

Instead, I dried my hands on a kitchen towel and finally asked the question I had been waiting the entire week to ask.

"What time are we leaving?"

Garrison raised his eyes. "Leaving for what?"

For a moment, I assumed he was joking. "The Ashworth Heritage Gala."

His mother turned away, apparently hiding a smile. His younger sister, Delphine, stood beside the dining room entrance wearing a pale blue evening gown. She watched me with an expression that almost resembled sympathy.

Garrison exhaled. "Marisol, you're staying home."

For several seconds, I could only stare at him.

The Ashworth Heritage Gala was among the most prestigious charity and business events in Charleston, South Carolina. Investors, hospital leaders, developers, philanthropists, and journalists would all attend. More importantly, the gala would feature the first public appearance of Corbin Capital's famously private chairwoman.

Garrison's company, Bellamy Urban Partners, had received hundreds of millions of dollars from funds associated with Corbin during the previous six years. He had talked about tonight for months. Yet somehow, his own wife had never been included in those plans.

"Why am I staying home?"

Garrison straightened his cuff link. "Because tonight isn't some family dinner. I need somebody beside me who understands investors, cameras, and professional conversations."

Priscilla laughed softly. "He needs somebody who actually looks like she belongs."

I glanced down at my cream blouse and plain black skirt.

Then the front door opened. A woman stepped inside without knocking.

Vienna Calloway. Garrison's vice president of communications. And, apparently, tonight's companion.

She wore a dark crimson gown and carried a small designer clutch. Her dark hair rested elegantly across one shoulder. She walked directly toward my husband and gently placed one hand against his arm.

"The car is ready."

Something inside me suddenly became quiet.

I looked toward Garrison. "You're bringing Vienna?"

His expression tightened. "Please don't make this awkward."

"You're my husband."

"And you're creating unnecessary drama."

I nearly laughed. I was standing silently inside my own kitchen while another woman rested her hand on my husband's arm, yet somehow I was supposedly creating the problem.

Garrison moved closer and lowered his voice. "You should remember what your life was before me. You had a small apartment, an aging car, and no important connections. Everything you have today came from marrying into this family."

I studied him carefully. "Is that honestly what you think?"

"It's reality."

No, I thought. It was simply the version of reality he preferred believing.

Ten minutes later, I stood near the window and watched Garrison open the limousine door for Vienna. Priscilla and Delphine climbed inside behind them. Then, moments before entering the car himself, Garrison rested his hand around Vienna's waist and kissed her.

I didn't cry. I simply stopped waiting.
