Chapter 3 - The Voice Through the Nursery Door

That night Damon didn't come to bed. He said Theo might cry all night and Marta couldn't handle every feeding alone.

I lay awake against the shared wall. Theo crying. Damon shushing him. Vivienne's footsteps crossing the nursery well past midnight.

Around two, I got up for the bathroom. The nursery door was open a few inches. Through the gap I saw Damon holding Theo while Vivienne sat in the nursing chair.

Her voice dropped. "Is everything settled with Camille?"

"Yes."

"You make absolutely sure nobody ever finds out."

"Relax, Mother." He rocked the baby. "Camille's already in Nassau. Theo's three months old. Once she's recovered I'll set her up with permanent residency down there and a blind trust."

"And Rosalind?"

Damon let out a soft laugh. "She won't suspect a thing."

"You're sure."

"She's lived under my roof for five years. She doesn't work. She's got no life of her own anymore. She's clueless." A pause. "Her whole world runs on my signature."

My fingers curled into my palm.

I stepped back from the door before either of them could see me, went into our room, and locked it.

Then I searched for Camille Beaumont.

Through a mutual contact I found her private Instagram. Her last post was three months old, geotagged Nassau. A photo of a newborn's tiny feet. Caption: Welcome to the world, my little prince.

I scrolled back. Five years. Our wedding day. There she was in the champagne dress, outside my suite. A friend had commented: The man you love just married someone else. Aren't you wrecked?

Camille had replied with a single winking emoji.

I turned the screen off and sat in the dark listening to my own heartbeat.

Then I made myself a promise: I would never cry over Damon Ashford again.

At four in the morning I downloaded a new encrypted app — one Damon had no idea existed — and I wrote it all down.

One. Damon and Camille had been together for years.

Two. Camille got pregnant. Theo was almost certainly Damon's son.

Three. The "adoption" was a cover to plant Theo in the house as the heir.

Four. Vivienne knew everything.

Five. Marta might know more than she let on.

Six. I needed DNA, financial records, phone evidence, proof of Camille's offshore life.

Seven. I needed a very good divorce lawyer.

And at the bottom: No reactions. No accusations. Play the obedient wife. Buy time.
