Chapter 11 - Three in the Morning

He put me in a quiet Manhattan hotel for the week. Inside the room I locked the door and laid Damon's signed agreement on the bed. His signature on the last page. Five years of marriage reduced to ink.

At two in the morning, Grant's call woke me.

"Rosalind." His voice was tight.

"What happened?"

"Damon's moving the rest of the assets. A source inside the company says he's got a meeting at nine tomorrow morning. He's transferring his entire fifteen percent of Ashford Holdings to Camille."

I sat straight up. "Current value?"

"Around forty million. And that's not all. After the transfer, he files personal bankruptcy."

I was wide awake now. "If he does both before he pays the settlement—"

"He'll claim he has no personal assets to satisfy it."

"Where is he?"

"The Scarsdale house. His car's there."

"Understood."

"Rosalind. Don't do anything reckless."

I hung up.

Within minutes I was dressed. Forty-five minutes later a car dropped me outside the Ashford gates. Almost three a.m. The whole property was dark except one light in Damon's second-floor study.

I pressed the intercom. After a few minutes Marta appeared in a robe. When she saw me she froze.

"Mrs. Keene?"

"Open the gate."

"What are you doing here?"

"It's urgent. Please."

Eventually the lock buzzed. I went up the drive fast, then upstairs, straight to the study, and pushed the doors open.

Damon shot to his feet. "How did you get in here?"

I ignored him. The desk was covered in legal paper. Share-transfer agreements. Bankruptcy schedules. Liquidation documents. On top, a transfer deed with Camille Beaumont's name.

I picked it up. "You're transferring your fifteen percent to Camille." Then another page. "And then you're filing bankruptcy."

He stared at me.

"How are you planning to pay a three-million-dollar settlement after you wipe out your personal assets on purpose?"

For a second, panic. Then it cleared, and he smiled slowly.

"Did you really think you'd won?"

I said nothing.

He came around the desk. "The agreement says your payment comes out of my personal liquid assets. If by tomorrow morning my personal holdings legally drop to zero, what exactly are you going to collect?"

"You're deliberately transferring assets to dodge your obligation."

He laughed. "Prove it. Once the transfer's recorded and the bankruptcy petition's filed, I'm legally insolvent." He spread his hands. "What do you take from a bankrupt man? And how are you going to raise that kid without my money?" He looked almost triumphant. "I warned you not to try to outsmart me."

I let him finish.

Then I reached into my coat, pulled out my phone, and tapped the screen.

His own voice filled the study.

If by tomorrow morning my personal holdings legally drop to zero, what exactly are you going to collect?

Then:

Once the transfer's recorded and the bankruptcy petition's filed, I'm legally insolvent.

The smile fell off his face. "You recorded me."

"Yes. You just described exactly what you intend to do. And the recording's already backed up somewhere you can't reach."

He stared. "You planned this."

"No. You talked." I pointed at the transfer papers. "One last option. Cancel the transfer. Wire three million into Grant's escrow account. Finalize the parental waiver."

"And if I don't?"

"Then the recording and the financial evidence go where they need to go."

May you like

His face turned vicious. "You've turned into a cold-blooded monster."

"No." My voice stayed level. "I turned into someone you can't control."
