Chapter 1 - The Baby on the Sofa

The room went quiet when I slid the ultrasound photo toward my husband. Damon barely looked at it before turning to his mother, who stood rocking the baby he'd carried through our front door only days earlier.

We'd been married five years, and in all that time my mother-in-law never let me forget the one thing she was sure I'd failed at: giving the Ashfords a son.

At first she buried it in concern. Then it became advice. Eventually she didn't bother softening it at all.

I was thirty-two. My cycle was regular, every scan was clear, and every test my doctor ordered came back normal.

"There's nothing wrong with you physically," she told me once, patting my knee like I was a nervous client. "Your odds are perfectly good. You just need to stop clenching so hard."

I walked out of that appointment holding the results like a trophy.

Driving back to our estate in Scarsdale, I pictured telling my husband over dinner. After five years of questions, waiting rooms, and Vivienne's little cuts at brunch, I finally had proof on paper that my body was not the problem.

Instead, I walked into the living room and found a baby.

Vivienne was on the velvet sofa with the infant against her chest. Our head housekeeper, Marta, stood beside her holding a warm bottle.

"This one landed on his feet," Marta cooed. "Imagine growing up an Ashford."

By the windows, my husband, Damon, was talking low into his phone.

"Yeah," he said. "Paperwork's almost done. Custody won't be a problem."

I stopped in the front hall. For a few seconds nobody even looked at me.

"Whose baby is that?" I asked.

Vivienne lifted her head. Her smile pulled tight at the corners.

"Damon didn't tell you?"

"No."

She looked down at the sleeping bundle. "He belonged to a distant cousin of Damon's. She died very suddenly, and there was no one. Damon couldn't stand the idea of the child going into foster care, so he stepped up."

I stared at the baby. White onesie. Fair skin. Ridiculously long lashes.

It was the face that stopped me. The eyebrows. The line of the jaw. Something in it was familiar in a way that made my stomach tighten.

Damon ended his call and crossed the room. "I was going to explain tonight."

"Explain what, exactly?"

"My cousin passed. The boy had nowhere to go. I wasn't going to let him get bounced around the system." He glanced at the bassinet by the fireplace. "So I brought him home. The legal side is nearly finished." Then he looked straight at me. "From today, he's our son."

"What cousin?" My voice stayed level. "I didn't know you had a pregnant cousin."

"You never met her."

Vivienne cut in before he could say more. "Rosalind, why are you cross-examining him? Damon does one generous thing and you stand there like he's confessed to a murder."

"I asked a question."

"And I answered it." She raised her chin. "People are going to say the Ashford daughter-in-law hasn't got a drop of compassion in her."

I looked back at Damon. His face gave me absolutely nothing.

So I stopped asking.
