Chapter 9 - What the Inventory Didn't Match

A retired search coordinator helped us go back through the old recovery inventory. Most of the gear had been cataloged years earlier without anyone knowing exactly what Grant had packed that morning. Now we did. The numbers didn't match.
The spare adult flotation vest was missing. So was one orange whistle.
The coordinator stared at the report a long moment, then said, "There was another incident on that lake, that same afternoon."
My stomach turned. "What incident?"
"Small boat capsized. Older man and his grandson."
"Did they survive?"
"Both of them."
I gripped the table. "Who helped them?"
He checked the report. "Statement says another fishing boat reached them first. One adult. Several boys."
