Chapter 10 - "Both Arms"

The grandfather still had the whistle when we finally met him. Six years later, it hung from a nail in his garage. Orange. Cheap. Grant's.

When I showed him our driveway photograph, he pointed immediately. "That's them."

My knees nearly gave out. He told us everything he remembered.

His boat had overturned when a storm rolled in faster than the forecast predicted. His grandson, Ben, was struggling to keep his head above the water. Then Grant's boat appeared. The boys threw flotation gear. One of them kept screaming instructions.

"Both arms! Put both arms through!"

I covered my mouth. Naomi grabbed my hand. I knew that voice without even needing to hear it — my middle son used to bark that exact same line helping his sisters into their backpacks every school morning.

"Both arms."

The grandfather smiled, sad. "That kid wouldn't stop yelling until Ben had it on right."

Another boat eventually reached them. Grant waited until help was close, then turned back toward shore as the weather worsened.

After that, the grandfather saw nothing more. No secret survival. No magical answer. Just the last known thing my husband and my sons ever did.

They had stopped. Because someone needed help.
