Chapter 8 - What She Said From the Stairs

"Mom," she said.

I put my hand on the stair railing to keep myself upright. "Come down here."

She shook her head. "You lied to me first."

"I did."

"You locked my whole life in a drawer and hid the key."

"I did that too."

"Why?" Her voice cracked. "Why would you do that?"

"Because I was terrified you'd find them and decide I wasn't enough for you."

"You were enough." She was crying so hard she could barely get it out. "That's the whole reason it hurt so much."

I climbed up one step. "And you let me believe you were dead. For a year."

Maddie clapped a hand over her mouth. "I didn't know how to come back. Every day I waited made it worse."

"Did you want to come home? At any point in that year, did you actually want to come home?"

"Every single day, Mom."

That was the thing that finally cracked the last hard piece loose in my chest.

"Then go get your shoes."

She blinked at me. "That's it?"

"No. That's step one. Shoes. Then your coat. Then the car. Then home. Then we sit down and we tell everyone the truth — all of it."

Her voice went small. "Do I still have a room?"

"You have a home," I said. "The room's just been sitting there, waiting for you."

Before we left, Marcus stepped in front of me.

"Rachel. Please. We never stopped loving her. Not for one day."

Deborah wiped her face with both hands. "We were nineteen. We were broke and scared out of our minds. We thought giving her up was the only way to give her a real life."

"You did give me a real life," Maddie said quietly from the bottom of the stairs.

Deborah nodded like the words landed somewhere tender.

"When she showed up here," Marcus said, "she had the papers and the bracelet. And believing her was easy, because we wanted it to be true so badly."

"And all of it was built on my lie," Maddie said.

"We let how much we wanted her make us careless," Deborah said. "That's on us too."

I picked up Maddie's bag from the floor by the door.

"I'm not going to pretend any of this is simple," I said. "But I'm not going to erase you either. Once Maddie's settled and safe, I'll call. We'll figure out what she needs."

May you like

Marcus's eyes filled. "Thank you."
