Chapter 1 - The Girl Who Stopped Singing

My 15-Year-Old Daughter Never Came Back from a Weekend Trip to Cedar Hollow Lake — Twelve Months On, One of Her Classmates Turned Up at My Door With the Phone the Police Never Found and Whispered, 'You Need to See the Final Picture'

Maddie had always been loud in the best way — belting out songs over the radio, chatting up baggers at the grocery store like she'd known them for years.

Then, over a few short weeks, something in her went quiet. Not shy quiet. Cold.

She said it was schoolwork.

"You're fifteen, not forty," I told her one Saturday morning, sliding a plate of blueberry pancakes onto the kitchen island. "Nobody's this worn out from geometry."

No smile.

"I'm not hungry, Mom."

"It's Saturday. Pancakes are a Saturday thing. They've always been a Saturday thing."

"Things change."

I set my hip against the counter. "Maddie. Talk to me. What happened?"

"Nothing happened."

"I don't believe that for a second."

She lifted her eyes off her phone. "Would you ever lie to me because you decided it was better for me that way?"

My hand went tight around the spatula.

"Where is this coming from?"

"Just answer the question."

I made myself breathe. "Moms protect their kids. That's the job."

She let out a short, flat laugh. "Sure. Protection."

Then she walked out of the room, her socked feet silent on the hallway floor.
