Chapter 2 - The Drawer She Was Never Supposed to Open

That night, after the house went dark, I opened the bottom drawer of my dresser. The folder was still there, tucked under a stack of winter sweaters. I unlocked it with the little key I kept hidden behind an old jewelry box.

Inside were Maddie's adoption papers, a letter I'd written years ago and never handed her, and a thin silver baby bracelet. One word was engraved on the back.

Birdie.

That's what Marcus and Deborah Ford had called her, back before she was mine. Her first parents.

I'd always promised myself I'd tell her when she was ready. But somewhere around her fourteenth birthday, I'd stopped pretending the timing was the problem. The problem was me. I was scared she'd want them. Scared she'd look at me one day and see a woman who'd been handed a child instead of a mother who'd earned one.

I closed the folder.

"What's that, Mom?"

I turned around so fast my elbow cracked against the dresser.

Maddie was in the doorway, her eyes locked on the open drawer.

"Nothing," I said. "Just old paperwork."

"If it's nothing, why'd you jump like that?"

"You scared me. You're supposed to be asleep."

"You never used to lock that drawer."

I closed my fist around the key. "I'm allowed to have things that are private, Maddie."

"So am I." Her voice was steady in a way that scared me more than shouting would have. "But when I keep something to myself, you call it an attitude problem."

"What is it you think I'm hiding?"

"I don't know yet." She looked past me, straight at the drawer. "Is it about me?"

My throat locked up. I couldn't get a single word out.

"Go pack for your trip," I finally said, as gently as I could.

Something in her face went flat. "That's an answer too, you know."

May you like

She backed out of the room. "I can pack by myself."
