Chapter 2 - His Name on Every Envelope

Under the yarn were envelopes. Stacks of them. Every one sealed. Every one addressed in her handwriting — and not one of them to me.

I lifted the top envelope with a shaking hand. The name written across the front knocked the air out of me.

My half-brother.

The one who'd walked away from this family fifteen years ago. The one she never, ever mentioned.

Every single envelope had his name on it.

Behind me, the bathroom door opened.

"You weren't supposed to find those." Her voice was steady. If anything, she sounded relieved.

I turned around slowly. "What is this? For years you told me he was gone. You said you had no idea where he even was."

She lowered herself into her chair and folded her hands. "I lied. To keep you safe."

"Safe from what?"

She held my eyes for a long time. "From what he did before he left."

"What did he do?"

She reached out and slipped the envelope from my fingers, pressing it flat against her chest. "If I tell you, you can't un-know it, Megan."

The room went silent.

Then her phone rang.

It lit up on the table between us. His name filled the screen.
