Chapter 7 - Strawberries in the Sun

Eleven months after Ruby was born, I went back to work as a senior litigation paralegal at Aaron's firm.

On my first morning, Mom brought Ruby downtown to meet me for lunch.

We sat outside in the spring sun while Ruby squashed strawberries in both fists and shrieked with laughter at the mess.

Mom watched her a while.

"Do you ever think about that phone call?"

"Sometimes."

"Which part?"

I looked at my daughter. Healthy. Safe. Sticky to the elbows.

"The part where they thought being quiet meant being powerless."

My phone buzzed on the table. Another apology from Grant. A long one, from the look of the preview.

I deleted it without opening it, lifted Ruby off the bench, and carried her back inside.
