Chapter 2 - The Question He Couldn't Answer

He followed me into the bedroom that night.
"What's that supposed to mean, Nora?"
I lowered Ruby into her bassinet and pulled the blanket up to her shoulders.
"It means I asked you a yes-or-no question, and you lied to my face."
He crossed his arms. "You just had major surgery. You're running on no sleep. Mom handles the books for the business, not you. You don't even know what you're looking at."
"That's not what I asked you."
His jaw flexed. And then he did the thing arrogant people do when they've mistaken a quiet woman for a harmless one.
He smirked.
"You're not going to do anything, Nora. Let's be honest. You need me right now."
I turned around and looked at him.

"No. I needed a husband four days ago. In a recovery room. You were in the parking lot taking a call from your mother."
He didn't have anything for that.
