Chapter 5 - The Envelope

Inside was a printed copy of Grant's text to his mother. Nora never checks anything.
Under that, divorce papers with my name already on them.
Under those, a letter from Aaron's firm confirming that the lender had received our fraud evidence, frozen any further draws on the company's credit line, and handed the forged guarantees to investigators.
Grant went gray.
"Nora. Listen to me."
"I did," I said. "For three years."
He grabbed the copy of his own text off the table like he could take it back by holding it.
"This isn't what it looks like."
"You wrote it, Grant."
"I meant she could use your information for the application. That's all. Mom said she'd explain it to you afterward."
"You handed her documents with my signature on them."
His voice broke. "We have a newborn, Nora."
May you like
I looked down at Ruby, asleep against me, her fist pressed to her cheek.
"Yeah. We do. That's exactly why I'm done teaching her that love means letting people humiliate you."
