Chapter 5 - What Was LeftWhen I got home, Renata was gone. She'd packed two suitcases and left a note claiming Bianca had "turned everyone against her." She was arrested three days later at her sister's home in Oklahoma.
Tobias was taken into custody in New York. The cases dragged on for months. He eventually faced charges involving assault, identity theft, forgery, and attempted theft of trust funds. Renata was charged in connection with the forged documents and conspiracy. The guardianship petition never reached a judge. The trust remained untouched.
More importantly, Bianca finally controlled her own life again. She and Sophia stayed with me for several months while she replaced her identification, opened new accounts, found an attorney, and rebuilt the career Tobias had pressured her to abandon.
I learned how much harm can hide behind perfectly ordinary text messages. I believed I was respecting my adult daughter's boundaries. In reality, someone else had been drawing those boundaries around her.
Almost a year later, Bianca moved into an apartment ten minutes from my house.
On the first night, I carried boxes upstairs while Sophia followed us through the empty living room. Bianca handed me a small framed receipt.
It was from the Dallas pharmacy. Forty dollars for baby formula.
"You kept this?"
She smiled through tears. "That was the day you found me."

She hugged me. And for the first time since that sidewalk in Dallas, neither of us was afraid of who might be watching.
