Chapter 1 - The SidewalkThe woman was sitting outside a pharmacy in downtown Dallas with a cardboard sign that read, "NEED BABY FORMULA. PLEASE."

A Woman Sitting Outside a Drugstore Asked Me for Help Buying Baby Formula. I Handed Her Forty Dollars Without a Second Thought. Then She Lifted Her Face, and My Entire Body Froze — It Was My Daughter, Who I Believed Was Hundreds of Miles Away.

I was already running late for a client dinner, but something about the way she kept one arm tightly around a diaper bag made me stop. I handed her forty dollars.

She whispered, "Thank you."

Then she looked up.

My briefcase slipped from my hand.

"Bianca?"

Her face turned pale.

My daughter was twenty-six. She was supposed to be living in New York with her fiancé, Tobias, working at an architecture firm. I had exchanged texts with her only two days earlier.

At least, I believed I had.

Now she was sitting on concrete in Texas wearing an oversized gray sweatshirt, her blond hair pulled neatly back, a fading mark visible along her jaw.

A baby started crying inside the stroller beside her. I stared at it.

"Whose baby is that?"

Her eyes filled with tears. "Mine."

I could barely breathe. "You had a baby?"

She grabbed my wrist. "Dad, please. Don't call Tobias."

"Why would I call him?"

"And don't call Renata."

Renata was my wife. Bianca's stepmother. For the previous four months, Renata had been telling me Bianca was overwhelmed with work and didn't want visitors. She'd even forwarded me photographs supposedly taken inside Bianca's apartment in Manhattan.

I pulled out my phone. "Bianca, I've been texting you every week."

She stared at the screen. Then she whispered, "Dad, Tobias took my phone six months ago."

May you like

Before I could respond, a black SUV stopped beside the curb. Bianca saw it and went rigid.

"He found me."
