Chapter 2 - What Tobias ControlledTobias stepped out of the SUV as though he had every right to be there. "Bianca, put Sophia in the car."

So the baby had a name. My granddaughter had a name, and I was learning it from the man my daughter feared.

I stepped in front of the stroller. "She's not going anywhere."

Tobias's expression barely shifted. "David, you don't understand. Bianca has postpartum problems. She left with the baby. I'm trying to bring them home safely."

"He locked my cards!" Bianca shouted. People near the pharmacy turned toward us.

Tobias lowered his voice. "She's confused."

Bianca pulled a folded document from the diaper bag and pushed it into my hands. A draft petition asking a New York court to appoint Tobias as her temporary guardian, on the grounds that she was supposedly experiencing severe postpartum mental-health problems and couldn't manage her own finances.

Attached was a statement claiming Bianca had threatened to disappear with the baby. The witness was Renata.

My wife.

I looked at Tobias. "What is this?"

"You took that," he said.

Bianca started crying. "I found it on his desk. He and Renata have been preparing this for months."

I raised my phone. "I'm calling 911."

Tobias stopped moving. Then Bianca told me the story in broken pieces.

She'd gotten pregnant shortly after moving to New York. Tobias convinced her not to tell me until after the first trimester. Then he kept finding reasons to delay. By the fifth month, he controlled their joint account. By the seventh, he had her passwords. After Sophia was born, he took Bianca's phone "so she could rest."

That was when the messages to me kept coming — just without her. The apartment photos Renata forwarded were old. The cheerful texts came from Tobias. And Renata kept telling me not to visit.

"They said you believed I was unstable," Bianca whispered. "Tobias showed me emails from you saying you wanted nothing to do with me until I got treatment."

"I never sent those."

Her face crumpled. "Why Dallas?" I asked.

Bianca had found the guardianship papers five days earlier. She took Sophia, withdrew the only cash she could access, and boarded a bus south because an old college friend lived in Texas. But the friend had moved. By that morning, Bianca had twenty-three dollars left.

Tobias smiled. "She still took my child across state lines."

A police siren sounded in the distance. He got back in the SUV and drove off.
