Chapter 4 - The Design DepartmentNeither of us spoke during the drive, not until I turned into a parking lot she immediately recognized.

Priya leaned forward. "No."
I parked. She stared through the windshield at the community college she'd attended before we got married.
"Desmond, why are we here?"
"You wanted to know how long I've been hiding something from you." I turned off the engine. "Let me show you."
The design department was on the second floor. Priya walked beside me, clutching the folder against her chest. At reception, I asked for Ingrid.
A woman's voice came from the doorway behind the desk. "Desmond?"
An older woman stepped into the hallway. Then she saw Priya and froze. "Priya?"
My wife blinked. "Do I know you?"
"I taught your second-year drafting class."
Priya stared at her. Ingrid glanced at the folder. "I remember your portfolio."
Priya's grip loosened slightly.
Ingrid invited us into her office and pulled up Priya's old academic records. Some credits were still valid. Others weren't — the curriculum had changed, the software had changed even more. She'd need refresher classes, portfolio work, probably several semesters depending on how many courses she took.
There was no shortcut. No miracle restart. But there was still a way back.
Priya barely looked at the screen. She kept looking at me. Finally she asked, "Why did you come here fourteen months ago?"

Ingrid glanced between us. "I'll give you two some privacy." She left the office.
Priya waited. "Well?"
