Chapter 8 - Owen Deserved Honesty

The next morning I sat on the edge of the bed next to Owen. He'd barely slept.
"Is Dad really alive?"
"Yes."
His eyes filled instantly.
"Then why didn't he come home?"
There was no clean answer. I held both his hands in mine.
"Your dad made some choices when he was scared and in trouble. Those choices hurt us really badly, and it's okay to be angry about that. But I need you to hear one thing and believe it. None of this happened because you weren't worth coming home to. Not one part of it."
Owen looked at the blanket.
"Does he still love me?"
"I think he does. But loving someone and showing up for them aren't always the same thing, buddy. You're going to learn which one your dad is from what he does now, not what he says."
That morning I let Adrian meet us in the hotel café.
He stood the second Owen walked in. Neither of them said anything for a moment.
Then Owen crossed the room, and Adrian dropped to his knees and wrapped him up, and my son held on with both arms.
Adrian was crying.
"I'm sorry, buddy. I should've come back. You didn't do anything wrong."
"Why did you leave me?" Owen said into his shoulder.
Adrian looked up at me. I gave him nothing. He needed to say this one himself.
"I got scared, and instead of being brave, I made a terrible choice. And then I made that same choice again every single morning because I was too ashamed to fix it."
Owen pulled back and wiped his nose. "Are you going to disappear again?"
Adrian swallowed hard.
May you like
"I will never choose to disappear again. But your mom decides what's safe for you, and whatever she says, I'll respect it."
For the first time since the airport, I heard something in his voice that sounded like being accountable instead of just explaining himself.
