Chapter 5 - The Moment He Couldn't Hide

The next afternoon Owen and I were stretched out on lounge chairs near the pool when I spotted Adrian and Bianca coming through the gate.
I started gathering our towels to leave.
Before I could get us up, Adrian stopped walking. His hand went to his chest. He sat down fast on the edge of an empty chair, blinking, gray in the face.
A couple near him started calling for hotel staff.
Whatever I was carrying around for him, I couldn't stand there and watch a man clutch his chest and do nothing.
I crossed the deck and told a pool attendant to call the hotel's medical team, now.
Adrian looked up.
My sunglasses had slipped down my nose.
For the first time in almost three years, we were looking straight at each other with nothing in between.
The color drained out of him completely.
"Delia?"
Owen went rigid behind me.
Adrian's eyes moved past me to him. His face came apart.
"Owen…"
My son stared at the father he'd spent years waiting for.
"Dad?"
I put my hands on Owen's shoulders and turned him gently.
"Come with me."
Adrian tried to push himself up. "Delia, please."
May you like
I looked at him. "Not here."
For once in his life, he did what I asked.
