Chapter 6 - When You're Invited

An hour later, Adam and I stood on Diane's porch again. This time we knocked.
When she opened the door, Adam quietly worked our emergency key off her ring.
"You come over when you're invited," he said. "Not before."

Then she dropped her eyes. "I'm sorry, Megan."
I waited.
Diane had apologized before — for being "too honest," for "hurting my feelings," for a dozen things that always somehow became my fault by the end of the sentence.
This time, she didn't say anything else.
"Thank you," I said. "That's a start."
On the drive home, Adam reached over and took my hand. "You okay?"

"Yeah," I said. "I'm done trying to impress your mother."
May you like
He smiled. "Good."
And for once, that was enough.
