By the third night, my fever had finally broken.
Around two in the morning, I woke up and saw blue light spilling into the hallway.
I got up and made my way toward the kitchen.
Adam was sitting at the table with a cold mug next to him. On his laptop screen was a zoomed-in photo of Diane's front porch. A sagging welcome mat. A crumpled paper bag. A dark smear across the threshold.
Next to the computer sat a yellow legal pad.

Fridge. Cabinets. Laundry. Towels.
Each one underlined twice.
"Adam?"
He flipped his hand over the pad.
"What are you doing?"
"Thinking."
He half-closed the laptop. "Go back to bed. I'll be in soon."

His eyes were calm in a way that made the back of my neck prickle.
I had no idea he was planning to wake me before sunrise.
