Chapter 2 - I Didn't Find It. I Owned It.

I opened the door the rest of the way.

His face was blotchy red. His hands wouldn't hold still.

"You had no right," he said. "No right in the world to do that."

I kept my voice flat and low. "Do what, Doug?"

He came up a step. "Don't. You know exactly what."

I didn't back up. After the year he'd handed me, I would have stood there barefoot in a snowstorm before I let him watch me flinch.

"That box," he finally spat. "Whatever you dug out of that box — you should've left it where it was."

I let him stand in it for a second.

"I didn't dig anything out, Doug. I used what already had my name on it."

Something in his face came loose. The anger slid off and left something underneath it that looked a lot more like panic.

"She knows," he said, mostly to himself. "She already knows."

I didn't ask who. I didn't have to.

He yanked his phone out of his pocket and stared at the screen like it might bite him. Whatever he saw drained the color right out of him.

He looked back up at me. "How long have you known?"

I stepped back and held the door open wide.

"You need to leave, Doug."

He didn't move.

And that was when a car rolled up slow and stopped at the end of my driveway.
