Chapter 2 - What He Held Against His Chest

Dale's hands were shaking.

Whatever Cole had thrown at him, he was pressing it flat against his chest now with both hands, angling his body away from me like a kid caught with something.

But I'd already seen enough.

It was a photograph.

"Dale." My voice barely made it out of my throat. "What is that?"

He wouldn't look at me.

Cole stood in the doorway, rain still coming down behind him, completely calm. That calm frightened me in a way Dale's shouting never had. My son had left this house a year ago flinching at every raised voice. The person on the porch didn't flinch at anything.

"You want to tell her, Dad?" Cole said. "Or should I?"

"You don't have the first idea what you're talking about." Dale's voice had dropped low and rough. "You're a kid. You found something you don't understand and you built a whole story around it—"

"I'm not a kid anymore." Cole's eyes didn't move off him. "I haven't been for a long time. You made sure of that."

I stepped forward and put my hand out for the photo.

Dale pulled it back against his chest. "Don't."

"Dale." I looked straight at him. "Give it to me. Right now."

The silence in that hallway was the loudest thing I have ever heard. Just the rain, and the old clock in the living room, and my husband breathing like he'd run up a flight of stairs.

Then Cole spoke again, quietly.

"Mom. The photo isn't even the worst part."

He reached back into the suitcase and pulled out a letter, an old envelope soft at the corners.

The return address made my knees go loose.

I knew that city.

And I knew the year printed on the postmark, because it was the same year Dale had sworn to me, over and over, that he'd never once left home.
