Chapter 6 - The Ring"I thought you were happy about our daughter," Trent whispered.

She looked at him. "You saw me crying, and you still said, 'We're having a daughter.'"
His face fell. She shook her head. "I wasn't crying because it was a girl." She pressed a hand to her stomach. "I already knew something was wrong."
My breath caught. "What do you mean?"
"Last night I saw a message on his phone. From Tania." Trent went pale. "I only saw her name, and the words, 'You cannot hide her forever.'"
The backyard seemed to tilt.
"I didn't know what it meant," Bianca said. "I thought maybe he was having an affair. Then the cake was pink. Trent looked relieved. That scared me more than anything."
He stepped toward her. "Bianca."
"No." Her voice went soft now. Firm. "You don't get to explain this away today."
She took off her wedding ring. Trent stared. She set it down beside the ruined cake.
"I waited four years for this baby," she said. "I survived every loss thinking we were surviving it together."
He started crying. "I was there."
"No," she said. "You were standing next to me. That's not the same thing."

I finally went to her. She leaned into me and, for the first time all afternoon, let herself fall apart. I held her while Trent stood several feet away. Nobody comforted him.
Bianca didn't make every decision that day. She didn't need to. She came home with me that night. Trent went somewhere else.
