Chapter 3 - I Want Her Number

The next morning, Daniel came home with a discharge sheet and orders to rest. He stopped in the kitchen doorway and looked toward the bassinets.
"How are they?"
"Fine."
"Can I hold them?"
"They're asleep. Wait until they're up."
He nodded slowly and lowered himself into a chair like every joint hurt.
I turned the laptop to face him. "What are these?"
He went still. "Corinne."
"How often do you see Ivy?"
"It's… complicated."
"How often, Daniel?"
"Sometimes."
"Once a month?"
A beat. "Maybe twice."
Seven years with a person teaches you things no shared password ever will. I knew the exact shape of his face when he was leaving out the part he was praying I wouldn't ask about.
"I want Bethany's number."
His head came up. "Why?"
"Because I want the truth from someone who isn't standing here deciding how much of it I'm allowed to have."
"Don't drag Bethany into our marriage."
"Her kid's drawing was in your pocket when you wrecked your car. She's already in it."
He looked down at his lap.
"The number, Daniel."
"Let me explain first—"

"You told me twice a month. I don't believe you. Give me the number."
Something in his face gave out. He gave me the number.
