Chapter 1 - What the Paramedics Handed Me

I Rushed to the Hospital After My Husband's Minor Car Accident — and the Small Thing Tucked Beside His Wallet Shattered Everything I Believed About Our Marriage

I walked into that hospital sure the accident was the worst thing waiting for me that afternoon.
I was wrong.
Dr. Reyes had already told me Daniel would be fine — a mild concussion, a fractured wrist, nothing that wouldn't heal. I should have been weak with relief. Instead I was standing alone in a bright hallway, holding a sealed plastic bag of my husband's things, staring at a child's drawing.
Three stick figures stood in a crooked row. Next to them, someone had drawn two tiny babies bundled in blue. Across the top, in wobbly crayon capitals, it said:
ME + DAD + THE BABIES
Below that, in smaller letters:
Maybe next time I can meet Jasper and Eli. Love, Ivy.
I read my sons' names twice, just to be sure my eyes weren't inventing them.
Then I folded the paper down the center, closed it inside my palm, and walked straight into Daniel's room.
"Who is Ivy?"
He turned his head against the pillow. There was a raw scrape near his hairline and a brace wrapped around his right wrist. For half a second his face lifted at the sight of me — and then it caught up to what I was holding.
"Where did you get that?"
"It was in the bag. With your wallet." I raised the drawing. "She knows our sons' names, Daniel."
He looked at the window.
That was the moment the floor seemed to tilt under me.
"Who is she?"
"Can we do this later? My head is splitting."
"Then talk fast and rest after."
He swallowed. "She's my daughter."
I stared at him. "Your what?"
"My daughter."
"How old is she?"
"Eight."
My brain started doing math on its own. Daniel and I had met seven years ago.
"Did you cheat on me?"
"No." It came out instantly. "No, Corinne. Bethany and I dated for a few months before I ever met you. We were done long before she found out she was pregnant."
"Bethany."
"Ivy's mother."
I gripped the paper tighter. "So you've had a daughter out there for eight years."
"I didn't know for eight years."
"How long?"
He stared at the blanket.
"Daniel."
"Eighteen months."
My whole body went cold.
Eighteen months ago I was still in the middle of IVF. Five years of it. He'd sat beside me through the injections, the bloodwork, the phone calls I got too scared to answer. Then, six months ago, Jasper and Eli were finally born. Through every second of it, I had trusted him without a crack. Shared passwords. Shared bank login. Shared calendar. I would have sworn there was nothing important in his life I couldn't see.
"You found out about her while I was still doing fertility treatments."
"I'd only just found out. I didn't—"
"And you said nothing."
"I didn't know how."
"She calls you Dad."
He shut his eyes.
The door opened and Dr. Reyes stepped in, saying he needed to check Daniel again.
"Don't leave," Daniel said.

I looked at the drawing in my hand. "We're not done."
Then I walked out.
