Chapter 5 - The Story He Told About Her Mind

At four-thirty, the shop's accountant, Carol Reeves, came in with her laptop under her arm. Carol had worked next to Walter for eighteen years, and she was already furious before she got her coat off.

"I should have called you months ago," Carol said.

"Why didn't you?"

"Because Grant kept telling me you'd approved everything. And when I said I wanted to hear it from you directly, he told me you were having memory problems. That you didn't want people bothering you at home."

Eleanor went very still.

"My memory."

Carol's face crumpled. "Eleanor. I'm so sorry."

That landed harder than the transfers did.

Carol opened a folder of emails. In one, Grant wrote that Eleanor had signed off on the payments to Trevor. In another, he wrote that his mother wanted him to take full ownership "before her condition gets worse."

Eleanor read every one of them twice.
