Chapter 3 - The Cabinet

Inside the cramped office, Caleb waited in a chair by the door while Eleanor unlocked the old accounting cabinet. She was looking for apprenticeship paperwork.

What she found instead was a folder of loan documents with her signature on them.

Eleanor had never signed a loan for anything.

Behind that folder were records of six transfers out of the shop's reserve account, all of them landing in a company owned by Bethany's brother, Trevor.

Total: $184,000.

Eleanor's hands went still.

She called the bank's fraud line first. Then her attorney. Then the shop's accountant. As the majority owner, she froze the operating credit line, revoked Grant's signing authority, and asked that every electronic transfer from the last three years be pulled and reviewed.

Caleb sat quietly across the desk the whole time.

"You still want work?" she asked when she finally hung up.

"Yes, ma'am."

"Good. Start by helping me count every tool in this building."

Three hours after the call in the grocery store, Eleanor's phone rang.

Grant was shouting before she got it to her ear.

"What did you do? The bank froze everything! Payroll is Friday!"

Eleanor looked through the office window. Caleb was in the first bay, counting socket sets under an old sign he'd found in the storage loft and propped carefully against the wall — the original one. WHITFIELD AUTO REPAIR. Walter's name, back where it belonged.

"No, Grant," she said. "What did you do?"

Then she ended the call.
