Chapter 3 - Meeting the Parents

I took Wes to Bishop & Vine Salon the next morning, then to buy a few outfits that actually fit. When he walked out from the barber's chair, clean-shaven, hair trimmed, I nearly didn't recognize him. Under all that road dust was a genuinely handsome man.

Three days later, I walked him into Sunday dinner and introduced him as my fiancé.

My mother's fork hit her plate.

"Nora! Why on earth didn't you tell us?"

"I wanted to be sure it was real before I said anything," I lied smoothly. "But Wes and I are crazy about each other. Aren't we, honey?"

Wes didn't miss a beat. He held my hand across the table and spun a whole story about how we'd met at a coffee cart and talked for two hours. My father laughed at his jokes. My mother dabbed her eyes with her napkin and said she'd started to think this day would never come.

A month later, we were married at the county courthouse.
