Chapter 5 - The Number I Hadn't Called

Three weeks later I was back in the apartment over Barlow's, hanging two frames on the wall by the window. The gas-station note went on the left. The adoption order went on the right. I stood there a long time looking at the two of them side by side.
For 20 years I'd called it a sacrifice.
Standing in that quiet apartment, I finally understood it never was one. It was the life I picked. And somewhere in the middle of it, without me noticing, that life had picked me back.
I sat down on the couch, pulled out my phone, and scrolled to a number I hadn't dialed in 12 years.
Colleen.
I hit call before I could talk myself out of it.
She picked up on the second ring.
May you like
"Wesley? I was wondering when you'd call."
