Chapter 3 - The Man at the End of the Hall

Then, eleven years into our marriage, my husband was standing at the far end of a maternity corridor with his coat still on and his eyes rimmed red.
I had never seen Daniel cry. Not at our wedding. Not at any of the three births. Not at his father's funeral.
Behind him was a hospital room. Through the glass I could see the corner of a plastic bassinet. Something small shifted under a pink blanket.
I stopped walking.
"Daniel."
He looked up. "I need you to sit down."
"Tell me why I'm here."
"Please."
"No." I couldn't make my legs bend. "I'm not sitting."
He stared at the floor tiles for a long moment.
"Because there's something I have to ask you," he said. "And I need you to hear all of it before you answer."
My mind went straight to the ugliest room it owns. I wish it hadn't. I wish I trusted my husband so completely that finding him outside a maternity ward with a newborn girl on the other side of the glass didn't send one thought clean through me.
His baby. With another woman.
I looked through the window again. Pink blanket. One tiny fist above it.
"Is she yours?"
Daniel looked genuinely sick. "What?"
"Don't make me ask twice."
"No." It came out instantly. "God, no. Never."
I held his eyes. "Then whose is she?"
May you like
He dragged both hands down his face.
"Do you remember me telling you about Grace?"
