Chapter 3 - The Third VoiceShe was still shouting when the university's general counsel stepped onto the stage and asked everyone to stay calm. I stood beside the podium, still without my actual diploma in hand.

He spoke carefully. "The university has received a preservation order in connection with an ongoing criminal investigation. Individuals identified in the recovered communications will be contacted directly."

I looked at my mother. Every trace of color left her face.

Priscilla noticed too. She turned toward her.

That was the exact moment Priscilla finally understood who the unnamed third participant was.

Our mother.

The forensic team had recovered voice recordings — her voice, clear and unmistakable.

"She needs to learn some gratitude."

"Priscilla, use the old laptop. Don't do this from your phone."

"If Meredith loses that job offer, maybe she'll finally come home and stop acting like she's better than us."

I had listened to those recordings alone in my apartment at two in the morning. I cried until there was nothing left. Then I forwarded every file to my attorney.

Now my mother hurried toward the aisle. An officer stepped into her path. "This is humiliating!" she snapped at me.

I met her eyes. "That was the idea, wasn't it?"

Priscilla's anger finally collapsed into raw panic. "Meredith, please. We're sisters."

"No," I said. "We have the same parents."

Her face fell completely. For years Priscilla had used blood as a weapon — pulling out family the second consequences showed up at the door.

Not this time.
