Chapter 2 - The EnvelopeDean Whitfield stepped toward the microphone. "Please remain seated."

Priscilla laughed. "Why? So you can protect her?"

My mother rose to stand beside her. "We deserve answers."

We.

That word almost made me smile, because it had shown up again and again in the messages my forensic team had recovered.

We need to make it look like she paid somebody.

We need to get her scholarship pulled before graduation.

We can finally teach her she isn't better than this family.

The messages had come from a cloud account Priscilla thought she'd deleted. Deleted — but never actually erased. The account had been accessed repeatedly through the home internet connection at my parents' house. And the money trail led straight to Priscilla's boyfriend, Grant, who had paid a sophomore computer science student to fabricate the screenshots.

By then I'd reached the top of the stage. Dean Whitfield glanced my way. I gave him a small nod. He already knew everything — the situation had grown far beyond a family squabble. The student Grant hired had accessed a university testing server while manufacturing the fake evidence, which pushed the entire case into criminal territory. And I'd saved every threatening voicemail Priscilla had left me since the investigation started. With each one, she'd gotten bolder. Crueler. Like repeating a lie loudly enough in public would somehow make it true.

Priscilla pointed at me. "See? She won't even deny it!"

I finally turned around. The whole auditorium went still.

"You're right," I said, calm and even. "I should respond."

Her face brightened. She thought I was about to defend myself. Maybe even beg.

Instead, I reached beneath my gown, pulled out the envelope, and handed it to Dean Whitfield.

"Could you read the first page?"

Her smile faltered.

My father stood up. "Meredith, don't turn this into a spectacle."

I looked straight at him. "You came here expecting to watch one."

The dean opened the envelope and read aloud.

"Findings of the Academic Integrity Review: all accusations made against Meredith Carter were determined to be fabricated. No evidence of academic misconduct was discovered."

A wave of stunned whispers rolled through the auditorium. Priscilla's face drained of color.

Before she could recover, I kept going. "The university asked me not to discuss the case publicly until investigators finished preserving the digital evidence."

My mother reached for Priscilla's arm. For one second, Priscilla looked genuinely afraid. Then the arrogance came right back.

"Anyone can fake a report."

I almost admired how spectacularly wrong that answer was.

Dean Whitfield turned the page. "The forensic review identified unauthorized activity connected to an account registered to Priscilla Carter."

Dead silence. Then, from somewhere in the back, a whisper: "Oh my God."

Grant stood up fast, started moving toward the aisle. Two campus police officers appeared near the side exit. He stopped where he was.

Priscilla stared at them, then at me. "You set me up."

I shook my head. "No. I documented what you did."

Her head snapped side to side. "This is insane. Mom — tell them."

My mother opened her mouth. Dean Whitfield kept reading.

"Recovered communications indicate a coordinated attempt by Priscilla Carter, Grant Ellison, and at least one additional participant to manufacture false evidence of academic misconduct."

My father sank slowly back into his seat.

May you like

That was the detail Priscilla had never understood. The envelope wasn't revenge.

It was evidence.
