At his mother's backyard cookout, she told a yard full of relatives that nobody would shed a tear if I disappeared while my husband said nothing — so I kept eating, drove off before dawn, and let every one of them find out for themselves how wrong she was.

Chapter 1 - One Slow Bite

The grill was still ticking with heat when Gloria turned and looked me dead in the eye.

There were twenty-three people in her backyard that afternoon. Church friends. Cousins. A couple of neighbors. Every last one of them eating food I'd spent six hours making.

Gloria set down her sweet tea, waited for the table to quiet, and smiled.

"Honestly, Nora," she said, "if you vanished tomorrow, nobody would even miss you."

The whole table laughed.

Wesley laughed. Danielle laughed. Uncle Ray laughed. Even the couple from church who could barely remember my name laughed with my biscuits still in their mouths.

I looked down at my plate.

A hot dog. Yellow mustard. Pickle relish on the side.

I picked it up, took one slow bite, and looked straight at my mother-in-law.

"We'll see."

Not one person at that table caught it. The conversation slid over to the Patriots preseason like I hadn't just been carved up in front of a yard full of people.

Two days later, every one of them would understand exactly what I meant.

My name is Nora. I was thirty-two years old, and for three years I was the woman who held my husband's family together while they treated me like I wasn't in the room.

This is the story of how I disappeared, and what it did to them when they realized I'd been the only thing keeping them upright.
