Chapter 4 - What the Records ShowedBy 8:10 that morning, Marcus and Sabrina were no longer preparing to board their flight. Airport personnel delayed their departure after our corporate attorney reported that Marcus was carrying company property that required review.
From that point forward, everything was handled through lawyers, compliance officers, investigators, and formal company procedures. No dramatic confrontation was necessary. The records spoke for themselves. Questionable authorizations. Attempted transfers. Unauthorized personal spending. Company property taken without approval. Invoices connected to Sabrina. And communications that raised serious questions about what the two of them had been planning.
Later that day, Marcus's attorney called me. "He wants to resolve this privately."
I looked around the kitchen where I had spent years making excuses for him. "So did I," I said. "Before I learned how much had been hidden from me."
Two weeks later, the board terminated Marcus for cause. A formal investigation followed. Financial authorities reviewed the transfers and company spending. Sabrina's consulting invoices were examined as well. Their confidence disappeared quickly once lawyers and investigators started asking questions.
Marcus still tried one final performance during our divorce mediation. He arrived in an expensive suit and leaned across the table.
"You're enjoying this."
I looked at the man I had spent nine years defending to friends, employees, and even myself. "No." I held his gaze. "I'm ending it."
Marcus demanded half of everything. My attorney calmly placed our prenuptial agreement on the table. His expression tightened. The agreement protected my inherited trust. My controlling shares. And the appreciation connected to those assets. It also contained financial misconduct provisions that allowed me to seek reimbursement for marital money improperly diverted.
Marcus stared at me. "You planned this."
