Chapter 2 - The PhotographBefore sunrise, I photographed the open safe. The empty jewelry box. The missing company documents. And several other details around the house that I believed might matter later. Then I sent everything to a private email account our attorney had arranged for me.

I didn't cry. There would be time for that later. First, I needed to protect what was left.
At 5:46 a.m., my phone lit up. Marcus had sent me a photograph from the airport. He was standing beside Sabrina. Both of them were smiling. And around Sabrina's wrist was what she believed to be my mother's bracelet.
Under the photo, Marcus had written:
"Goodbye, useless woman. By morning, there'll be nothing left for you."
I stared at the message until my heartbeat steadied. Then I typed four words.
"The accounts are frozen."
His call came almost immediately.
Marcus was already shouting when I answered. "What did you do?"
I sat at the kitchen island in my robe while dawn slowly brightened the windows. "Good morning, Marcus."
"Don't play games with me. The transfers aren't going through. My cards aren't working. Sabrina's card isn't working. What did you do?"
I smiled. "You mean the company cards you weren't supposed to use for personal travel?"
Silence. Then his voice changed. "You're confused."
"No, Marcus. For the first time in our marriage, you're the confused one."
He immediately softened his tone. "Elena, sweetheart, whatever you think you saw—"
"I saw twelve questionable signatures, three unauthorized transfer attempts, $640,000 routed through a vendor account, and $68,000 in personal expenses charged to Rosewood Holdings."

Marcus stopped talking. In the background, I heard Sabrina whisper something. Then he snapped, "You have no idea how the company operates."
That almost made me laugh.
