Chapter 3 - CanceledThe next morning, I canceled everything. The mortgage transfer. Canceled. Car insurance. Canceled. Grocery account. Canceled. Medical payments. Canceled. The monthly emergency fund Mom had started depending on. Canceled.

For the first week, the calls never stopped. Mom cried. Dad accused me of disrespecting them. Wesley told me I was destroying the family. When guilt failed, they tried anger. When anger failed, they went public.

Mom began posting old childhood pictures of me with emotional captions about everything she had sacrificed. Dad posted vague quotes about children who forgot their parents after becoming successful. Then came the post that everyone knew was aimed at me.

Some daughters gain wealth and lose their heart.

Relatives piled on. Aunts called me cold. Cousins said I was selfish. Family friends told me I needed to apologize before it was too late.

My parents clearly had a plan. Humiliate me publicly until I became uncomfortable enough to start sending money again.

They thought I would panic. Instead, I waited. Because there was something they didn't know. For three years, I had saved everything.

One evening, after another wave of angry comments, I walked into my office. I closed the door behind me. Then I opened the bottom drawer of my filing cabinet. Inside was a thick folder. I placed it on my desk.

Bank transfer records. Mortgage confirmations. Insurance receipts. Medical bills. Screenshots of conversations. Messages where Mom asked me for specific amounts of money. Texts where Dad admitted they couldn't make certain payments without me. And saved voicemails. Voicemails from the same parents who were now telling everyone I had abandoned them.

In one recording, Mom said: "You've saved us again. I don't know what we'd do without you."

Another contained Dad thanking me for preventing them from falling behind on the mortgage.

I had enough evidence to destroy the story they had created online.

But there was more. At the bottom of the folder sat another set of documents. They had nothing to do with the money I had given my parents. They involved Grandma Rosalind. And what I had discovered in those papers made being excluded from the will seem almost insignificant.
