Chapter 1 - The Lawsuit
My name is Marcus Alden, and at twenty-two, I bought my first home without borrowing a single dollar from my family.
I worked two jobs through college, earned an engineering degree, shared a tiny apartment with two roommates, drove a twelve-year-old pickup truck, and invested nearly every extra paycheck I made. While my friends traveled, I worked weekends. While my younger brother, Corey, quit jobs every few months because they were "too stressful," I kept saving.
The day I got the keys, I thought my parents might finally be proud of me.
Instead, they showed up furious.
"You should've bought Corey a house first," my mother snapped.
My father nodded. "You're the successful one. He's struggling."
I laughed, genuinely thinking they were joking.
They weren't.
Within weeks they were demanding I refinance the house and hand Corey half its value so he could "start his life." I refused. Corey never even asked me directly — he stood behind our parents and let them fight for him, just like always.
Then things got even more absurd. My parents filed a civil lawsuit claiming I had "morally deprived" Corey of financial opportunities by refusing to support him despite having the means. Even their own attorney admitted there was no contract requiring me to give Corey anything. Instead he argued that because my parents had supported me growing up, I now had a responsibility to financially support the family.
The lawsuit attracted local media fast. Outside the courthouse, reporters asked whether I regretted buying the house.
"My home isn't the problem," I told them. "Expecting someone else to build your future is."
Inside, my mother suddenly pointed at me. "You stole his future!"
Several people in the gallery reacted. I stood slowly.
"No," I said. "I built mine."
Then I looked directly at Corey. "Tell everyone one thing you've done to earn the house you're demanding."
