Chapter 6 - The Letter Serena Left BehindThat evening, Corinne received authorization to open one final archived envelope. Beckett recognized his mother's handwriting instantly. His hands started shaking.
"You open it."
"Only if you're certain," Desmond said.
Beckett nodded.
The letter had been written shortly before Serena passed, addressed to Camille. Desmond read it aloud.
"Camille, if you're reading this, then you found out the truth about us. There's something you should know about Beckett. I told him his father was gone before Maisie was born. That wasn't true."
Beckett shot to his feet. "Stop."
Desmond lowered the letter immediately. Beckett walked to the window, then turned back around. "No. Keep reading."
"His father is alive. His name is Julian Cross. We met while we were both studying music. I got scared when I was pregnant with Beckett. Julian's family had money and influence, and I convinced myself they'd eventually try to take my son from me. So I disappeared. Julian was told the baby hadn't survived. Years later I found out he'd moved to Seattle. I meant to tell him. But every year that passed made the truth harder to say out loud. Please don't tell Beckett until you've spoken with Julian. Let Beckett choose what happens next. I already took that choice away from both of them once."
Beckett went completely still. "My mother knew where he was?"
Corinne nodded softly. "It appears that way."
"All those years?"
Nobody answered. Then Corinne said, "Camille arranged for Julian to meet us tonight."
