Chapter 10 - Two Bedrooms Near the School

Slowly, the house changed. Renee handled most weeknight meals. Sophie learned two simple recipes. Owen started setting the table. Cole stopped dropping his backpack in the doorway. After her second paycheck, Renee began covering part of the groceries, then part of the utilities.

"It feels like you're counting everything," she said one night.

"I'm following the agreement we both signed."

"I hate that agreement."

"I know."

She sighed. "I also hate that I needed it."

That was progress.

Three months in, Renee appeared in my office doorway. And knocked. Actually knocked.

"Come in."

"I found an apartment," she said. "Near the kids' school. It's small — two bedrooms. Sophie and Cole might have to share for a while."

"Can you afford it?"

"Yes."

"Without me?"

"That was rude."

"It was relevant."

She smiled and showed me a budget she'd built entirely herself — rent, utilities, food, insurance, transportation, emergency childcare. For the first time since that family meeting, Renee had built a future that didn't depend on my house.

"When?"

"Six weeks."

I expected pure relief. Instead I felt something sadder too. I'd wanted my quiet home back for months. Now I understood the boundaries hadn't erased the fact that I loved my sister. They'd just let me separate her from everything I'd started to resent.

We packed together. Cole cried when the boxes appeared and asked if he was being made to leave because he'd spilled juice on the rug.

I crouched beside him. "No."

"Because Mom was bad?"

"No."

"Then why?"

"Because your mom found a home for you."

He thought about it. "So we're moving because she did good?"

"Yes."

He brightened instantly. "That's better."

Renee heard it from the hallway. Later, after the kids were asleep, she said, "Thank you for telling him that."

"It's true."

"You could've told him I ruined everything."

May you like

"That's also partly true."

She rolled her eyes. "Thanks."
