Chapter 1 - The Box on the PatioI linked my arm through Nolan's and stepped out onto the sunlit patio, sunlight bouncing hard off the pool behind us, kids already shrieking and cannonballing into the deep end.

When My Ex Brought His Young Mistress to Our Son's Pool Party, I Introduced Everyone to My New "Boyfriend" — A Handsome Actor I'd Hired for the Day

My ex-husband, Trent — the man who'd walked out on me and our newborn son six months earlier to run off with his twenty-five-year-old secretary, Bianca — was waiting near the outdoor bar with that same smug grin he'd worn through our entire divorce. He gave Nolan a slow once-over, took in the tailored navy suit and the easy, broad-shouldered confidence, and walked straight toward us with a glass of scotch already in hand.
He made sure the whole backyard could hear him.
"This is pathetic!" Trent laughed, head tipped back like it was the funniest thing he'd seen all year. "Who'd you hire, Ivy? Some discount actor off a talent site? A guy like him would never actually choose a washed-up single mother. Have you even looked in a mirror lately?"
The entire party went dead quiet. Conversations cut off mid-sentence around the pool. Heat crawled up my neck and across my face, and for one awful second I genuinely wanted the ground to open and swallow me whole in front of everyone.
But Nolan didn't let go of my hand. His warm smile vanished, replaced by something ice-cold and fully in control of the moment. He turned to face Trent with a look of pure, unhurried pity.
"Actually, Trent," he said, quiet enough that the whole patio had to lean in to hear it, "I've been looking forward to meeting you all afternoon."
Trent's grin faltered. "What the hell is that supposed to mean?"
Without another word, Nolan reached into his jacket, pulled out a small black velvet box, and held it out steady in his open palm. "I brought you something."
Trent snorted. "What, a consolation prize?" He snatched it out of Nolan's hand and flipped it open without hesitation, already smirking at me over the lid.
The second he saw what was inside, the smirk vanished entirely. What came out of him wasn't a laugh — it was a raw, strangled gasp that seemed to come from somewhere much deeper than his throat. Every drop of color drained out of his face, leaving him a sick, papery white. His hands shook so violently the box slipped clean out of his fingers and cracked against the stone patio.
Inside wasn't an engagement ring. It was a solid gold, custom-engraved flash drive stamped with the federal seal of the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Because the man Trent firmly believed was a hired actor for the afternoon was something else entirely.
"I'm not an actor, Trent," Nolan said, his voice carrying clean across the silent patio with total, unshakeable authority. "My name is Nolan Reid. I'm the senior forensic auditor and lead litigator for Ashcroft Litigation Group, out of Washington, D.C."
Trent staggered back two full steps, one hand clutching his chest, mouth opening and closing without a sound coming out, his eyes locked on the man standing beside me like he was seeing him for the first time.
"Ivy didn't hire me to play her boyfriend," Nolan continued, calmly dismantling Trent piece by piece in front of a yard full of stunned suburban parents. "She hired my firm six months ago, right after your divorce finalized, the moment she noticed some structural discrepancies in your executive severance filings and stock option disclosures. We didn't just find the affair, Trent. We followed the entire paper trail."

He took one more step forward, backing Trent up against the edge of the outdoor kitchen counter.
"We found the four-point-two million dollars you systematically pulled out of your own company's employee expansion fund and pension reserves," Nolan said, each word landing like a hammer strike. "We traced the wire transfers you used to buy Bianca's beachfront condo in Belize. You committed federal perjury during divorce discovery, and you committed felony wire fraud hiding marital and corporate assets from the mother of your son."
