Chapter 2 - What the Hospital Confirmed

Ruby pulled back so fast Danny felt her nails dig into his shirt.
"No, Mommy," she whispered. "Please don't."
That was all Danny needed. He stepped away from Tara.
"I'm taking her to the hospital."
"Like hell you are," Tara snapped. "She's my daughter."
"She needs help."
"She needs to stop making me look bad."
Danny looked at her then, really looked at her. The expensive dress. The wine on her breath. The bright lipstick. The rage that came easier than concern.
"Move."
Tara blocked the door. "If you leave with her, I'll say you kidnapped her."
"Say whatever you want."
Danny walked past her with Ruby wrapped in his jacket. Tara screamed behind him loud enough for porch lights to flick on down the street.
At the emergency room, one look at Ruby made the nurse pick up the phone. Dr. Patricia Osei examined her gently, but her face grew tighter with every note she wrote.
"She's underweight, dehydrated, and showing signs of prolonged neglect," the doctor said. "This did not happen overnight."
Danny sat beside the bed, holding Ruby's hand.
Child services came the next morning. Mrs. Alvarado explained procedures, temporary placement, investigations, kinship caregiver evaluations. Danny listened because he had to. Every word felt too slow when Ruby had already waited too long.
"I'll do whatever you need," he said.
But the first custody hearing broke him. Tara arrived in a conservative blue blouse, soft voice, clean tears. Her lawyer called it grief. Depression. A struggling mother who needed support.

The judge gave Tara temporary custody with conditions. Parenting classes. Testing. Home visits. Danny received supervised visitation.
Outside the courthouse, Tara turned back with a small satisfied smile. "Face it, Danny. She's mine. You'll never take her."
