Chapter 6 - The Second Envelope
Prescott put his hand out again. "Give me the page."
Doc didn't move.
Emma lifted the envelope off her knee and felt something heavier slide against the inside seam. The single page hadn't been the only thing her father put in there. A second folded document was still inside — thicker than the letter, marked with the same date as the safety complaint.
She drew it out far enough for Doc to see the first line.
His eyes went from the document to Prescott.
The commander's attention left Kodiak for the first time since the dog stood up. Whatever calm he'd carried across that hangar tightened into something more deliberate.
Emma held the second document against her father's hoodie.
"My dad told me to get Kodiak first," she said. "Then he told me to make everyone read what happened."

Kodiak stood at the gate, no longer scanning the room for a man who would never walk in. His eyes stayed on Emma.
And when Doc reached for the second page, Commander Prescott finally understood that the dog scheduled to die at dawn was not the only witness Dan Dawson had left behind.
